MY Vegetable Patch homegrown bitter gourd

Bitter Gourd

English name: Bitter Gourd, Bitter Melon, Bitter Apple, Bitter Squash, Balsam-pear
Malay name: Peria
Chinese name: 苦瓜, 涼瓜

Plant type: Climbers

Products used:

Location: Backyard garden with full sun

Watering requirement: 2 times a day – early in the morning and late in the evening. It is important to keep the planting bed moist and well-drained.

Feeding: Add compost or manure during the growing season once every 2 weeks.

Avoid: Growing with potatoes and herbs.

Care: Guide the vine on a frequent basis and pinch off when they reach the top of the support. For the plant to fruit, it requires pollination between the female (with swelling at the base) and male flowers. Sometimes, this has to be done manually if bees or pollinating insects fail to visit both flowers. Just pick the male flowers and place the center part of the flower against the center of female flowers.

Common issues:

  • Pests: Cucumber beetles and fruit flies
  • Diseases: Powdery mildew, downy mildew, watermelon mosaic virus, bacterial wilts and rust and rots

Harvest: 12 to 16 weeks after planting
